My first memory of reading was the summer between 3rd and 4th grade. It was ridiculously hot in central Florida, and there were no girls in my neighborhood to play with. So, like many kids my age I went to my mom whining, “I’m bored!” I am sure that I had my mother’s complete sympathy, as she raised 4 kids, worked full time, and did all the other things required of running a household. She was quick to come to my rescue, since that was her main concern, with a box of Weekly Reader books. That small box changed the course of my life forever. With those first books, I entered new worlds, became different people, and lived 1000’s of lives. My reading life began with: Charlotte’s Web, Ramona Forever, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Freckle Juice, and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
Books saved me. They were my escape from all the bad/sad/hard things in my life. They are my inspiration, my relaxation, and my connection to others. During the pandemic they let me leave my house safely and travel when the world was shut down and chaos ensued.
Through a friend I was introduced to a wonderful group of authors on Facebook. Friends and Fiction gave book lovers all over the United States and maybe even the world, a place to connect, share, and hear from other authors. It is led by Mary Kay Andrews, Patty Callahan Henry, Kristin Harmel, and Kristy Woodson Harvey, which I believe to be one of the most talented and genuine group of women that I have ever met. From there I joined the F&F Official Book Club and met even more amazing book friends. It is these groups and others that have given me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and begin this new journey.
As such….To Be Read is born! I hope to share my thoughts, recommendations, reviews, writing tips, author interviews, and visits to independent books stores with anyone that loves the book world like I do. This blog is about all thing books, and maybe even fun bookish merchandise one day. I hope you like it and look forward to hearing from you!
